Choosing vegan food can sometimes make eating out a bit challenging, but don't despair! Try Asian, Indian, Italian, Middle Eastern, and other ethnic restaurants which will almost always have something to suit your needs. If you're out of town and are having a hard time locating a restaurant, call a local health food store and ask an employee for a suggestion. While there are many other restaurants in Rhode Island where you can find vegan items, we wanted to highlight the following variety and selection. Call riva if you'd like us to add a restaurant. Here are some suggestions that may help you have an enjoyable dining experience~

Don’t be afraid to ask and speak up as you are the customer.

Many restaurants will make substitutions and adjust dishes to accommodate your preferences.

Chinese and Thai restaurants commonly use fish sauce in dishes—even those listed as vegetarian. But they can substitute soy sauce if you ask.

Chicken broth is also a common sauce or soup base in many restaurant dishes.

Salad dressings and spaghetti sauces sometimes contain cheese or anchovies.

Call ahead before going to a new restaurant and ask questions about their menu.

Let restaurants know that you’d like to see more vegan options.
